TMI Develops Engineered Hybrid Metals for Medical Devices
Biocompatible hybrid metals for implantable medical devices, surgical instruments, and drug delivery devices are available from Technical Materials Inc. One application for hybrid metal is an electronic interconnect in an implantable device. In this application, a biocompatible refractory metal is joined with another metal to create a hybrid metal that offers unique properties and functions. TMI has also developed engineered metals in which a single strip can be comprised of differing grades of stainless steel (and other metals), temper conditions, and thickness. These strips may be fabricated into a wide variety of surgical instruments and components of medical devices. With the addition of refractory metal processing, TMI is now the only company in North America with design and manufacturing capabilities utilizing roll-bond cladding, electroplating, electron beam welding, profile machining, and solder coating.

. TMI Adds Stretch Bend Leveling Capabilities
TMI now has several state-of-the-art, programmable stretch bend leveling (SBL) machines. These provide TMI the ability to control strip metal shape prior to delivery to customers. A variety of shape issues including flatness, twist, camber, and crossbow can be eliminated or biased to meet customer requirements. A major benefit to stampers is the control SBL provides over die-exit camber. The programmable features of these machines provides reproducible coil-to-coil shape control. TMI Offers Silver Plating Technical Materials, Inc. now introduces silver plating to our Electroplating capabilities. TMI offers silver plating in matte, semi-bright, and bright finishes. It can be produced in parts and strip, as selective Ag stripes, edge Ag stripes or overall Ag plating - - with a maximum width of 8" and a maximum gauge of ~0.040" with a maximum weight of ~400 pound coils. For more information on Ag Plating visit our Electroplating page. Or contact John Massoyan at 1-800-241-2523 ext. 621 or email him at John_Massoyan@beminc.com. TMI Broadens Markets Position with Recently Installed Mills. Additions to the equipment roster at Technical Materials, Inc. (TMI) have set the stage for the specialty strip metal manufacturer's entry into additional clad metal markets. In recent months, TMI has added a new rolling mill and a bonding mill with more power and thicker-gauge capability than previously existed. The new bonding mill raises the plant's maximum finish gauge capability from 0.060 inch to 0.125 inch and the width from 5.5 inches to 8.0 inches. Cladding is a combination of two or more metals that have been metallurgically joined together. This technology provides cost-effective solutions in today's applications for the automotive, telecom, and semiconductor industries. Traditionally, TMI has not had access to the clad metal market that requires finish width of greater than 5.5 inches or gauges thicker than 0.060 inch. Now, having the larger inlay bonding mill enables TMI to go after several new business opportunities. These include high-power electrical switching applications and thermal management substrates. Also, TMI will be able to pursue more aggressively non-electrical applications for the jewelry industry as well as coinage and tokens which tend toward high-volume runs. The rolling mill has state-of-the-art finishing capabilities. It has fully automatic gauge control with running gauge tolerance as tight as plus-or-minus 50 micro-inches, and width capacity to process the wider material that is produced on the new bonding mill. In addition to broadening TMI's market position, these new capabilities also give it greater economies of scale on high volume jobs. If you have any questions about the capabilities of the new mills please e-mail us or call us at 1-800-241-2523. |
