Preliminary Report on the Properties of Thin Au Alloy Connector Contact Materials for Telecom Applications

Philip W. Lees,
Technical Materials, Inc.
Lincoln, R.I.

Abstract

On a per-ounce basis, Pd is currently more expensive than gold. Supply is also a potential problem because most Pd originates in Russia. This paper provides an update of our current efforts on replacing Pd-based systems with thinner, harder gold alloys. These systems offer greater nobility, high hardness, and excellent formability and are currently cost-competitive with qualified Pd-based systems.

Select material properties are provided as well as performance data from ductility, corrosion and sliding wear tests.
